Johnnie's life looks perfect.

She has an adoring family: three older brothers, two crazy uncles, and one loving father who would do anything for her.

She's a violinist with skills that could rival Paganini's. She could make a career out of her passion if she gets into the right college.

She has a grandfather who has enough money to fill three Olympic-sized swimming pools, and often gives his grandchildren hundred dollar bills instead of candy.

But if you look at the fine print, you'll find that things aren't what they seem.

For the past 8 years, Johnnie's lived in Italy . . . secluded, alone, with nothing but guards to keep her company. "It's for your own safety," her family tells her. The sad thing is, they're probably right; they're the Tomarchios, a decades old crime family that has half of the U.S. under their shadow. As expected, rivalries are common--as well as casualties.

All Johnnie wants to do is be away from her family; she's nothing like them, after all. Because of them, she's never had friends, has never gone to school, and has really never had a chance at a life. When she turns 18, and she finally sees a way out, she grasps it with all she has. But as she tries to claw further away from her family, she begins to realize that sometimes your namesake has more control over your destiny than you do.

[COMPLETED] "Shoot," Joey mumbles, letting out a string of profanities under his breath. We turn around to find a group of men, all with guns, standing where we just came from, and they look pissed... probably because they were forced to run through this tunnel after us. "Thought you could get away, didn't you?" The man who I saw before asks. His husky voice booms in the hollow tunnel, reverberating off of the dirt walls. His voice sounds familiar, and a realization strikes me. It sounds like the man from my dream. I remember him holding a gun and wearing a blue suit, smiling evilly at me. "Leave us alone," Joey says, sounding dangerous and snapping me out of my thoughts. The levity of the situation hits-we need to get out of here. I look around for a route of escape and thankfully I see a light, literally, at the end of the second tunnel. I let out a small, almost inaudible, gasp and nudge Joey. He looks at me and I subtly gesture with my head to the second tunnel. He glances at it and immediately we are on the same page. His jaw sets and he looks at the group. The man speaks up again, chuckling darkly-a sound I will never forget and will be permanently etched into my brain, "You can thank your father for starting this mess." -------------------------- Liza was a normal teenaged girl, living the average life that an eighteen year old girl should be living. I would have had a normal life, with mundane problems and simple joys. I would have started practicing as a general doctor by the age of 24 with intentions of specializing and later becoming a neurosurgeon. I would have lived a normal life far from crime and danger, a life centered around saving lives in a hospital, with taxes and rising fuel prices being my most pressing concern. However, life, fake friends and a mafia brother whose attention I had somehow caught, had other plans. Instead of a normal and safe life, I lived a life of pain, fear, crime, danger, blood, loss and guns thousands of kilometers from my home, over the seas...in Italy. Though it is said that one must not define themselves by the things they have been through, the things they have done nor by what was done to them, I sometimes fail so spot the difference. I am aware that I am not defined by the things I have done, that the things I have been through only helped me better understand and reshape myself to be someone stronger who could face the challenges I had to go through and that the things that have been done to me only taught me valuable lessons I can never forget. Despite all that however, I know for certain that had I not been betrayed by those I had believed to be family, I would not have lived the life that I had and I would not be where I am today. It would not be too far a stretch to say that my life is...
