Karl has a sweet tooth and eats as much candy as he can a day; it's his way of coping. After eating his first bubblegum piece he is hooked. It's nice having something to chew on. After a while, it becomes a problem, an addiction. He gets annoyed with the people around him and tends to push them away. Karl ends up all alone again, trying to chew his problems away.
