16-year-old Aschandra Raylor does not like conflict.Never has, never will. She's content with staying in her pacifistic coastal town. She doesn't mind living with her Citizen Number tattooed on her wrist, just like everyone else in the country of Kitemno. The number-based Class System is just another part of life, as common as waking up in the morning or feeling cold in the winter. She doesn't mind the bi-annual Provings where the government makes sure that no citizens are "Specials", people with mysterious powers and abilities who were responsible for the Continental War.She doesn't mind. But when her brother Chaid joins a rebel organization and Ascha is shortly whisked away to join one herself, she has to make an important decision.
She knows she is not a Regular.
Should she put everyone in this new place at risk?
And if she already has, will she fight for them?
Will she be able to finish strong?

Everyone expects their daughter to be a beautiful supermodel, but what can I say? I care more about science and maths than I do for fashion. I am someone most people would call a nerd. I stay invisible to everyone except my best friend Jessica Fawk; no one in the school even knows that I am the sister of the school football team's captain. Then one day when I come home I discover something I never thought I would encounter. I decide that the bullying has to stop. I spring towards the house phone, dusty from years of doing absolutely nothing, so I can call the police. I don't make it. Halfway there, I trip on my own pant-leg and face plant on the floor. The woman steps over me and retrieves the phone. She looks at it as if it's a foreign object, "This won't be necessary. All I want to do is talk to you." For some reason, instead of screaming, I stay silent. She smiles and pulls out a chair from the kitchen table for me to sit on. When I don't sit, she says, "If you want to know what's going on, then sit." I think about it for a moment. She hasn't hurt me yet, and I have to admit, I am quite curious as to what's going on.
