Verity Caree's life ends before her future begins. Just as she was working toward her job as an instructor in her home district, she is selected to participate in the seventeenth Hunger Games. This ends much more than a time of peace for her.
For during her time at the Capitol, while preparing for her battle in the arena, she begins to see things that are more shadow than light behind the shimmering facade of the Capitol, which had always seemed to her like a paradise on earth.
All of Panem is riddled with violence and darkness, and the only force left to resist it is the rebellion, into which Verity will now be dragged willy-nilly. At least at the beginning.
Because the more time she spends with the rebellion, the more she learns what it's like to fight, the stronger the doubts in her become, doubts about her former life and all the things she used to believe in.

And can she really make a difference?
