Olivia is diagnosed with a rare disease where her neurons are weak causing her brain to shut down twice or thrice in a day. But that's not it. It is in these episodes that she is dragged into a situation by her mind, ( not transported wholly) and these are life threatening situations...some symbolic...some connected to her own trauma. If her mind is not strong enough to get out of this alive, she dies in reality because her brain shuts off completely.
