Starshine is a 15-year-old introvert, who works at a library to keep herself from living out on the streets. She attends the local high school and is mercilessly bullied because of her ice-cold attitude and loner habits. Having no friends, she puts up a brick wall between herself and anyone who tries to help her, including her kind and enthusiastic teacher, Mr. June. During a school field trip to the Mono's Zoo, disaster strikes and she finds herself needing to ask for help even though she would rather deal with it herself.
