Molly lost her parents when she was very young. She was taken in by her uncle and his family, and for a while, life was happy. Until the day Molly's uncle passed away, and her aunt and cousins treated her cruelly. Molly had only one friend at StoneHill Manor, a maid named Laura. One day, Molly asks her aunt to send her to school, telling her that she hates to live at StoneHill. It is many months before a decision is made, however, her aunt informs her she will be going, as she cannot stand the sight of her. Molly is overjoyed to be going to school, but her heart breaks at the thought of leaving Laura. Once at the school, Molly meets the charming Gilbert Harding, and the two become instant best friends. After Molly has graduated, she goes to live with Gilbert and his family at Woodland Manor, where she becomes a governess to his two younger sisters, Charlotte and Lillian. As time goes on, Molly and Gilbert begin to fall in love with one another, sneaking off to the lake, hiding behind the willow trees, sharing secret kisses, and maybe even something more...but one day, Gilbert's father invites the Doyle family to stay at Woodland Manor, as Gilbert's father and Mr. Doyle have been friends for many years. The Doyle family just so happen to have a daughter three years younger than Gilbert. Gilbert's father tries to force his son into an arranged marriage with Miss Doyle, but Gilbert's heart belongs to Molly. Will Molly and Gilbert be able to be together? Or will Gilbert be forced to marry a woman he does not love?
