The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler uses the Doppler effect that transmits "pings" of sound. This effect makes use of a sequence of fast, steady pulses that bounce suspended particles off the moving water, reflecting the instrument. Particles moving quickly towards the instrument return waves with a higher frequency; however, particles moving away from the instrument produce low-frequency feedback.
