Prequel to my upcoming story Legends of the Past.
The Avengers beat Loki in New York and won many more battles.
Tony and Pepper had a son, as did Bruce and Betty. Thor took Jane and Darcy to visit Asgard. Steve found Bucky. Everyone was happy.
That's when Loki made his move.
He shut off all portals to Earth and defeated the Avengers that remained. Now, almost a hundred years later, his empire is going strong. But the blood of the Avengers still lives on.
We are showed that with a short tale in the life of Ginny. Humans may be living in the ashes, but they aren't defeated yet.
In the words of Tony Stark, "Because if we can't protect the Earth, you can be damn sure we'll Avenge it."

Walk a Mile
Loki comes to earth seeking redemption by himself. Of his own free will. But what happens when the Avengers find him helping old people across the busy streets of New york. Everyone on the street runs in fear. The old lady he was helping pats him on the arm and thanks him. Much to the Avengers surprise. Now there's this huge fight going on. Civilians are running in every direction trying to get away from the fight. Some are getting caught in the middle so Loki tries his best to get them away. But the Avengers thinking he's trying to hold a hostage makes the situation even worse. Now Loki needs to get the civilian out of the way and defend himself. He cast a shield around himself and the people. Teleporting the people away he drops the shield . "Listen to me!" Loki groaned as the Avengers ignored his pleas. "What did you do?!" There was so much going on he didn't even see who asked the question. He just answered without thinking."Nothing! You people are the ones that attacked first. As I was helping someone! What if they had gotten hurt?!" The Avengers faltered for just a second before straightening their resolve. As the fight went on Loki was getting tired of their incompetence. "Stop!" Loki yelled heavily out of breath. All the Avengers were frozen by Loki's magic. Even the almighty Thor. "You so-called avengers just attacked me unprovoked, risked multiple lives, and won't even listen to what I have to say." He turned to Thor. "But this must seem normal to you my "dear brother" seeing how this is just like the old days." There was a few minutes of silence before anything happened. People started to flood the streets again. Trying to get a glimpse at the action. "Now since I don't want any trouble, I'll come with you without a fight. Like I would have done before had you not shot at my ass! Now I'm going to drop the spell. But don't you dare fire at me!"
