Once a professional, confident railroad foreman, a freak accident with a tamping iron would change Phineas Gage's life forever. After a three-month stay in a hospital, Gage, with his face disfigured and his personality altered from brain damage, finds integrating himself back into society difficult. When he takes a risk and moves to Chile, finding a steady job in the process, he eventually feels as if he has gotten his life back. However, when tragedy strikes and suspicion falls onto Gage, how will he react?

Based on a true story. Sam Kean has a wonderful article on the real Phineas Gage and his story on Slate.com. Check it out if you'd like to see the events I based this off of. :)

Mazi thinks everything is fixable given the right tools and time, just not herself. She's irreversibly broken, incomplete, a lost cause. Living in the grey area of not quite dead but not really living, she's the perfect definition of a paradox. Gray is her contradiction. He sees life through more than the lens of black and white. Only living enough to make it through each day. Get up, fix cars, work a second job, sleep, rinse, repeat. Maybe what they need is a little spice in their lives; maybe what they need is a match lit under their asses. "I hate how I noticed the small details, like the slight dusting of freckles below his eyes and across his nose... His eyes. His eyes made me feel like they could see right through me. It was a combination of alarming and mesmerizing. There is no other way to describe him other than intense. My abysmal past with men should be enough to scare me off, to go to any cost to avoid him. It has done exceptionally well in spooking me off the footpath leading to disaster with men every single time, nearly. This time appears to be the exception. I hate that. He is the epitome of the fine line between hate and love. I take that back, I just love to hate him. The way he speaks to me only makes my anger flare. The way he looks at me makes my body temperature rise." Read more to follow their whirlwind romance, healing traumas, and the mending of hearts they didn't break. Update every week!

"When I tell you that he hates me, you'll probably assume it's because he's a jerk...but you'd be wrong. He's not a jerk. I am." --- Several years ago tragedy struck Emma's home, leaving her broken... like a cup with cracks spiraling and slithering around the edges. Slowly, bitterness crept in like tar, hardening between each fracture to resemble a deceitful wholeness. She became a monster, and targeted her venom on the sweetest person she could find: Trinity Nixon. Too bad the boy Emma longed for was Trinity's brother. Now, as Emma fights to win the heart of the boy who despises her, she's forced to hide her demons. She paints her fragile cup in pinks, yellows, and oranges - all the colors of the sun. She paints on a smile, and an unusual sense of humor, so that the world will view her as bright and cheerful, when in reality she's breaking. But she's completely unprepared for the acidic truth that melts away the tar, demolishing her shell, and awakening the Emma White buried deep inside. --- Book 1 in The Dismantled Pride series *Story was previously titled "Faking It"
