"You like Shane, don't you." Tammi sighed wearily and brushed windblown locks out of her eyes. Shawna felt the blood rushing into her cheeks and she looked away. "I don't understand it, Shawna," her mother continued. "I mean... Shane is a perfectly nice and respectable young man. But... he seems rather... shallow. There isn't much to him, if you know what I mean. It just doesn't make sense, you having feelings for someone like Shane."

"There is nothing wrong with Shane," Shawna answered tensely. "And there is nothing remarkable about Darien. Just because he's half a foot taller than everyone else and talks twice as much doesn't mean that I should marry him."

"But Shawna..."

"No! You don't understand... I do not like Darien, I have never liked Darien, and I will never like Darien. Not... not in that way. We were only ever friends and that is all we'll ever be."
