Tensions are and always have been high between vampires and werewolves, with humans either escalating or getting caught in between. although there are some that happen to be unable to fit into either side of the conflict. Being both a vampire and a werewolf could easily get you killed just based on your eyes alone. Stephen having recently been turned into one of the few by none other than Tony Stark was not how he was planning on spending this trip. Add in a young teenager who is also like them and it seems to be the perfect mix for chaos, and maybe a bit of a family.
