Touches on a range of topics such as abuse justified by religion, the no-perfect-solution acts for survival, lgbt parenting, honesty, family secrets, self-acceptance, fate, and how life gives no guarantees.
Book two can be read and enjoyed without reading book one, but there are spoilers in book two which will take some of the enjoyment away from reading the books out of order.

Lorelei and Cora

Despite their shared ordeal, Lorelei and Cora found solace in each other as they confronted the abuses perpetrated by their biological and stepfamily members. The question lingers: Can they escape their dire circumstances and pursue their dreams? Or will they be trapped, unable to break free from the cycle of violence? I can remember the fear of the tree falling in front of my car, after it was struck by lightning. I can remember how it felt, cold rain on a summer afternoon pounded on my skin as I stepped out of my car. I was headed home to my parents house after graduating college.
