Twilight Sparkle was never a normal female, from the moment she was born she had a Cutie Mark, unlike the others, who received theirs as children.

For Twilight's own safety, Celestia (current ruler after sealling her sister on the moon) celled Twilight's Cutie Mark, and the seal wouldn't break until she turned 7 years old.

But Celestia didn't know many things she caused because of that. The unicorns that Celestia thought were Twilight's parents were fake.

Because of her seal, Twilight has a connection with Luna (Celestia's sister) and thus caused Twilight's subconscious to visit Luna every time she falls asleep.
