Ivan Fedorov is coming back from football practice when he kicks Liam in the balls. How rude. Liam, that is, because Liam Zakharov is a bully and deserves it.

Ivan saves Maxim Kirill-Vitali, a boy with hair that could hide him in the Russian snow. And unlike Maxim's old friends, Ivan sticks around, even after Maxim shows Ivan his canine teeth and explains why his favorite lollipops taste like sugar and metal.

And they're good friends. They promise to stick together, against hell or high water. So, when Ivan finds a draft letter telling him to join the Red Army, Maxim keeps their promise.

And five decades later, a snow-haired man visits the Soviet War Memorial, and he finds a kid with brown curls and black eyes.

"You look just like your grandfather."
