I am a Gatekeeper.

When you die, my report will determine your fate in the afterlife.

For most souls, this is a fairly straightforward matter. I simply scan their memories and offer my opinion. For others, things can get complicated.

When a soul has been severed by trauma into a number of alters, each must be assessed on their own merits.

In order to accomplish that task, I must often overshadow the soul of someone close to the subject to see firsthand who they actually are and what they've been dealing with. Only then can I provide an accurate and just assessment at the time of their passing.

My first case took me to the 1990s American Midwest where a man named Erik helped me invade the soul space of my initial mission subject. Speaking through Erik, let me begin the story.

They used my vulnerability against me. They used that weapon, to make me accept their stupid idea. And I of course, accepted it, I didn't even know what they were going to do. They tugged and poked and even shoved their disgusting finger in your wound, just to see you cry. To see you change. No pitty in their eyes. They just continue. They drag you around with metal chains, hit you and turn you into a experiment. But I had enough of the tugging, the clawing, the moaning, the crying and pleading for them to stop, but simply feeding them with our pain. They turned me into something, that neither do they know what I am. Their afraid of me, of my reflexes, my strength. I killed a lot of them. They say I have a cold heart, that I don't feel nothing. That's why they call me: Death -----------------------------------------************************************--------------------------------------------- Death. The Damned Children

3 parts Complete Mature

Humanity has unlocked the elixir of eternal life. The brain can be cleaned and washed back into youthfulness. The body cannot. But by transporting the brain to a younger body, one that can host it, it can continue living. The synthetically produced humans are not people. Of course they're not. If they were people then the originally occurring humans would be monsters for killing them and transferring originally occurring brains into their bodies. The originally occurring people are not monsters. Of course not. They just want to live. And to save something you need to kill something. The synths are a necessary sacrifice. ----- Ika has heard what the originals think about the synths. But she also knows her own heart, and her own grief, and her own terror.
