I have spent much of my life studying the origins of our world and it's most abundant and valuable resource, coracea. Abarah is blessed with power from the divine themselves and none are more blessed than those who practice the ancient art and science of Refraction. In its many forms Refraction has advanced our civilization, ended wars, and improved the lives of all. In this tome I hope you discover a greater reverence for this who practice Refraction. And maybe, if you are favored, discover within yourself a desire to learn Refraction and join the ranks of the great men and women who have led mankind from humble origins to greatness.
- Sage El Zehyn

A/N this textbook is an explanation of the magic system used in Abarah told in great detail through the words of one of its residents. Our "author" is a great and respected sage who still holds reverence for the Imperyals who stripped him of his livelihood. This story will provide an in depth look at the magic system as well as give some world history. Story notes throughout detail my thought process. I appreciate any feedback or questions. Thank you for reading!

Among the spared, magic chooses a rare few, connecting them to the moon or sea. These are the One-Hundreds, mermaids and humans with the power to save the world-or corrupt it. When Cressa-la breaks the first rule of her tribe and touches the water surrounding her island, everything she knows turns on its head. Talking, sinister dolphins, mind control, and a whole world just under the waves await her on her eigteenth birthday... but she never asked for any of this. All she wanted was to become a Tribe Leader and take care of her village. It's amazing how one screw-up can change everything. A relentless darkness reaches for her, wanting her affections for his own twisted purposes. In opposition stands a fractured light, haunted by a painful past where corruption eroded friendship. Unless Cressa-la can bring the darkness to his knees and fight the war raging inside, the world is doomed. • • • Content warning: This story contains themes of depression and violence.

Two hundred years of peace have passed in Zertima, a land filled with magic, creatures, and mages. However, after those two hundred years comes an era of fear, fighting, and death. The Venom's Curse, known as the world's greatest danger, has climbed up to reach a level of great power, with the help of his fierce hunger for battle and commanding, that is strong enough to possibly secure his rule of the entire mage world. In order to save Zertima from potential collapse and eternal perishing, four young mages are found, called the Elemental Mages. The Mages - Water, Earth, Fire, and Air - are taken to a sheltered location named the Mage Sanctuary to train together and prepare for their eventual battle with the Venom's Curse and to rid of the trepidation he has cast across all of Zertima. However, not all of the Mages are willing to commit their life to train with the others and help save the mage world. Ignacia, the Elemental Mage of Fire, is the newest and last mage to be Founded and come to the others. Along with easily getting into arguments with Water Mage Salil, she is in an internal battle with herself trying to decide what choice she should really choose to carry through with. *Book originally inspired by "The Burning Sky" by Sherry Thomas.
