Matthew loved his mother, and he knew she loved him too. Ever since daddy died, mommy had been a little angry. Susan would leave the house at around 11am every morning, and come back at 9pm. When she returned she was almost always intoxicated, but Matthew didn't mind, because he knew his mommy loved him, and that's all that mattered.

Utopia

Sometimes things don't come in big bangs and loud bursts. Sometimes things tiptoe by and you don't know they're happening until they've happened. She's started this story a hundred times in a hundred ways--it never seemed right. The truth is this: a woman, a girl, went to sleep and woke up somewhere else. And it broke her. After, she would be eighteen and a hundred years older, she still would not finish high school, and she would never not be in love again.
