About 200 years into the future, people of the United States must retreat into military bases. Inside 12 bases around the country, the citizens are nearly safe against the "Shadows", an international organization to destroy the US. Each military base is not able to communicate to each other, so the citizens must try to survive. Their way of controlling the population is a test. A test of strength. A test of knowledge. A test of worthiness. A test to the death.

When the world was burnt by the sun some groups of people were ready and build special compounds called Bases. They set bases up all over the globe and waited for the fire of the sun. When it came they hadn't anticipated the extent of solar power. Their power sources were ruined and they knew that they wouldn't survive long without them. Some people left to take their chances in the new wild but those who were left spent hours pondering solutions as the power dwindled and the life-force faded. Only when the people who were left out to face the sun found the bases did they find a solution. The outsiders were deranged and barely human, changed by the radiation of the sun, they were taken into the bases and were sedated and hooked up to the power source. For years the bases thrived under stolen energy. Highest rank 778 in Science Fiction.
