It first spread in Hawkins due to a gas explosion in one of the factories however it only corrupted a few people for unknown reasons. Either it was their ever growing love for two unidentified individuals or they had come into contact with something far greater. 

The virus can take over the ones mind and body as they become obsessed with their chosen lover. 

Either the virus has an awful effect on the mind or that person has gone crazy.
