In the year 2471, humanity has pushed beyond the solar system. The starship Erebus, part of the ambitious Nova Reach initiative, is sent on a decades-long mission to investigate a strange pattern of dead stars in a distant region of the galaxy-stars that should still be burning bright for millions of years. Onboard is Commander Elena Ward, a war veteran turned astronaut haunted by loss, and Dr. Keon Rell, a brilliant xenolinguist whose theories about cosmic intelligence were once laughed out of academia. As the crew gets closer to their destination, systems begin to fail, time seems to warp, and a strange signal pulses from the heart of a dead star-almost like it's calling out. They soon realize they're not the first to answer this call.
