"do you even love me?" i looked up at her with sad eyes, half-wishing her answer was yes, just to give me one reason to stay. 

"how can you say that? i do everything i do to keep you safe. you know that," she said, pacing and waving her hands like she always does. faux tears left her eyes, and i shook my head, staring at the scabs and bruises on my arms.

"someone who loved me wouldn't do this."

arlo cerrean moved states away for a fresh, new college life. despite usually being lonely, she makes some new friends and even reconnects with old ones. arlo works and learns alongside these friends, which help her form a new, stronger bond in her life. very strong. this semi-restrictive, well meaning tie is what defines arlo until a mystery woman shows up at her place of work, and offers to make a new bond.
