Castiel has a strong bond with Dean Winchester, except that bond includes love. Everyone around him knows, everyone except Dean himself. Even Satan himself watches, bored and annoyed as the two run around clueless. 
After a freak accident that results in Castiel's brink-of-death experience, Lucifer- takes consented possession of Castiel to "heal him" but instead, or better, while healing Castiel, Lucifer gets tired of watching this blind romance and gets the boys together himself.
