He swooped down his head, placing his mouth by my ear. “I’m leaving tonight.”
“Leaving?” I lowered my voice to his and gripped his shoulders tighter. “Why?”
“I have to – need to; I can explain more later, but I have to ask – will you come with me?”
I frowned, nose scrunching up with distaste. “Leave?”
His next words were so quiet, I had to stress my ears to hear properly. “Never to return.”

I suppose I'll never know why he didn't follow me. It was the thing I feared most. I knew that if he came for me a second time, I wouldn't be able to say 'no'. I wouldn't be able to run. But I had to. I had to go. I couldn't let him be hurt because of me. He would live on now, and I would marry another.
