For one to inhabit oddities that are truly beyond normalcy, the town has been surprisingly peaceful for many centuries. He couldn't protect it because he was battling the mystical Ender Dragon with his wife. Sadly, there were no survivors in the attack, and Notch and his wife got eaten by the dragon.
