"Run."
We hopped over the dead trees, moving faster than ever before. I turned back and noticed Kanwar was falling behind. I stopped and turned around shouting, "This way!" Kanwar looked around for a quick second, then hobbled in my direction. As he reached me, I noticed his leg had gotten pretty bad. "Here," I said turning my back to him and beckoning him, "hop on, I'll take care of the rest."
"You're the best," with relief in his voice, he pulled up onto my back. I could feel a leg on either side and reached my hands back to get a strong hold, "hurry up, I can hear their footsteps."
With his warning, I looked up and braced my feet. I started moving forward, first slowly then accelerated. I could feel the heat radiating through my calves, meeting the bottom of my heels.
"Hold on," I grunted under his weight.
A gun shot sounded right behind. At this moment, I started at Mach speed, stopping almost instantly. We noticed the town we had entered was kilometers from the woods we were just in. The gunshot in the distance showing just how far we had made it. I dropped Kanwar and fell to one knee.
"Oh god dude." I felt his hand touch my back. The warmth that came from his hand felt comfortable. "You've been shot," he said in a quick and almost mute voice.
"Oh?" I looked down questioning my friend. "Well, would you look at that," a big grin cracked across my face, "look how close they got to hitting my friend," I pointed to the spot where the hot blood poured into my light blue t-shirt, "you were right," moving my finger up very slightly, "here."
I fell to my side now starting to feel the wound, but stayed composed.
I could hear the grief crack in my old friend's voice as he forced his sentence, "yep, coulda been me," he said sadly chuckling, "why would you do this to me," his voice got quieter than a new born in its first sleep. I could see his lips moving, but I was past my point. I looked at him, nodded once, and faded to darkness.
