Chase Collins returns to Massachusetts a few years after his disappearance.  He's weaker and just as addicted to his power.  Despite his magic addiction, Chase has a sense of morality buried deep inside him.  When he senses someone using magic, besides the other Sons of Ipswich (Caleb, Pogue, Tyler, and Reid), someone who actually intends to gain ultimate power and remake the world in his image, he goes to the only people who he thinks can help.

Jess Schmidt has been passed around foster homes until she aged out.  She attends college in Cambridge with the Sons of Ipswich, not knowing who they are.  She meets Chase Collins first and is instantly drawn to him.  Caleb, Pogue, Tyler, and Reid aren't thrilled with the idea of Jess getting involved with Chase, but she ignores them.  With Chase, she becomes involved in the greater evil coming and rediscovers her own power as an emerging, previously unknown sixth family of Ipswich.
