On March 3, 1969 the United States Navy established and elite school for the top one percent of its pilots. It's purpose was to teach the lost art of aerial combat and to insure that the handful of men who graduated were the best fighter pilots in the world.

They succeeded.

Today, the Navy calls it Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call it: Top Gun

Thanks to some liquid courage, and a rather determined friend, naval aviator Claddagh "Lucky" Moran finds a night of some much needed stress relief in the form of an attractive, and cocky, pilot by the name of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. After rushing out the door the next morning, neither of them expect to ever see each other again. Such plan is quickly turned on its head, however, when they discover they will be spending the next few weeks of their lives as classmates in the country's most elite flight school.
