Matilda is in her second year of college at Emerson College in New York. She, however, does not live on campus like the rest of her friends do. Out of guilt, she stays living at home to help her mother with her little brother Miles. Miles' dad and Matilda's stepfather, Joseph, does not like Matilda and she doesn't like him either. For her mom, Kathy's, sake, they stay civil and try to make things easy on her. As a stockbroker, Kathy is always stressed and doesn't need their bickering piled up on her other responsibilities.

"And you're trying to lift off the ground on those old two wheels."

On top of being a big necessity at home and trying to keep her grades up in school, Matilda is also a waitress at a restaurant called 'Wally's Family Cuisine'. The owner is very hard on her and her coworkers. It always seems to Matilda that she can't do anything right no matter where she is.

"Nothing 'bout the way that you were treated ever seemed especially alarming till now."

Her best friend Poppy lives in a dorm with her other best friend Jasmine. They plead to get Matilda to live with them but she can't. They throw in her face that they, and Matilda's boyfriend Lionel go to parties and have the time of their lives and that she's missing out. She knows she's missing out but theres nothing she can do about it. Besides, her possessive boyfriend would never dare let her go to a party anyway. But no one needs to know about that.

As Matilda fears that the rest of her life would play out in this sad loop, an unexpected man attends one of her dad's luncheons. A man known to the world as arguably the biggest male musician of this generation. Harry Styles. When their eyes met, they both knew their lives would never be the same.
