An immortal 5751 year old witch named Circe is considered by far the most powerful witch on earth she was granted immortality by the coven of the twelve most powerful witches in history they said that she must stay on earth to carry out the duty of all witches so Circe remained on earth for 5751 years carrying out the sacred mission of all witches.
When Klaus's plan to kill Elena and become the hybrid was discovered the spirits sent Circe and her friends to stop him and make sure he cannot make any hybrids
