Five years before Shadow was even conceptualised, there was another attempt to create a cure for Maria. One human with terminal cancer opted for a live experiment hoping to find a cure for their disease. I mean, if you can cure cancer, then you can cure just about anything, right?

The experiment didn't go exactly to plan, with several last-minute changes occurring, all with the consent of the ill human. By the end, the cancer was gone, but this person wasn't...exactly human anymore. Their brain and nervous system were implanted into another vessel that pumped synthetic blood. It didn't need to eat, sleep, or hydrate. Living, yes, but was it truly alive?

Three years into Project Retry, Professor Gerald Robotnik threw in the towel. There had to be a better, easier way to cure his granddaughter.

And that is when Project Shadow began.

Two years after the abandonment of furthering the development of Project Retry, Project Shadow had been a significant success. A true Ultimate Lifeform, made from organic and inorganic materials alike. And Project Retry was forgotten about.

It's been fifty-five years since Project Retry was established, and it's now or never for the human-turned-hedgehog. Project Shadow has finally been released, and this predecessor to the Ultimate Lifeform might have to be the voice of reason that prevents the destruction of the planet.
