Without the Dragonborn to sway the warring factions of Skyrim, they begin to crumble away. The war between the Imperials and stormcloaks is still at a stalemate despite the imminent and known threat of dragons after Helgen, as well as Alduin descending on Riverwood and torching it to the ground. The Greybeards hide in High Hrothgar and refuse the entrance of all who visit, besides the deliveries of food.
The guilds of Skyrim such as the companions, thieves guild and dark brotherhood see an increase in work as the contracts roll in and become rich as a result.
The mages of Winterhold collapse into the sea, their college collapsing into the depths and sending their tomes, students, masters, and everything else with it. What caused the collapse is unknown, but it is theorised that a malevolent god may have intervened.
Hirel is a resident of Whiterun after fleeing from Riverwood and taking sanctuary in the hold. It is buckling under the weight of the refugees from the war and the dragon attacks, and he finds himself on the brink of being turned away from Whiterun.

So, if you look up Farkas's skill stats, they might surprise you... On one of my Skyrim play-throughs, I did the thing where you drop a piece of armor near Farkas and then tell him he can have it when he asks, and that makes him available as a follower... so I took Farkas with me all over Skyrim even though I'd only started the Companion's quest line. That prompted me to look some things up and come up with a few head-cannons... So here's the story that I tried to make tie everything in my head together... "Farkas is intrigued when he meets a small imperial archer and is unexpectedly caught up in her adventures. As he learns more about her he soon decides he'll do everything he can to protect her... and that promise takes him places he never imagined he'd go; brings discoveries no one thought possible; and changes the course of everything..." Honor of the Dragonborn
Third story to "His Harbinger," sequel to "Something to Protect." Everything makes much more sense if you at least read "His Harbinger" first. Vilkas x Dragonborn (established) Farkas x Lydia (also established and a bit background) Based on my play through of the Dragonborn DLC with my Dragonborn Krinna Dovh, a female Nord. Krinna has visions and premonitions so there are some things she just knows (continuing a headcannon established in the first two books). Mostly told from Vilkas's perspective, with occasional snippets from the Dragonborn's perspective. Also explores aspects of married life; Vilkas being hot-tempered, but sweet and loyal. Story is set after the Companions quest line, the civil war, and the main story line is complete (events of "His Harbinger") and after the Dawnguard DLC (events of "Something to Protect") Also not entirely cannon compliant. And of course this is a fanfiction, the only thing unique to me is my specific characterization of the Dragonborn, everything else belongs to Bethesda, including portions of the dialogue. A man she's met a few times before. Farkas. She joins the group and they train her. Her destiny falls into place as her life is quickly changed as she falls for the werewolf named Farkas.
