At the beginning of fall, Mora visits her besfriend, Emy, who lives at Bowman's Beach in Sanibel, Florida to say goodbye before her school year begins all the way back home in Arizona. Emy and Mora are determind to enjoy every moment, but with Emy's annoying, but unnervingly handsome, brother, Everett, who makes it his life goal to pester with Mora every second he gets, things are a bit harder to enjoy. Also, with talk of a deadly virus which is spreading all over the globe, Mora worries much more then she hopd she would on this trip. Still trying to make the best of this trip, Mora and Emy go out one night (joined by Everette and his besfriend, Luka). That's when the screaming starts. Mora tries to understand what's going on and descovers somthing no seventeen-year-old wants to find out, people are dying and being reborn as something non-human, The Gone, as they call them. There's talk of a cure in LA. With service down and gas mysteriosly dissapearing, Mora has no way to reach her family. Alliances are formed to stick together until people reach their families or the facility in LA. But allainces can be broken, and some will be. More people will die, that's something Mora knows. But will Mora and her group be one of them?
