The world continued to spin on its axis, countless sunsets giving way to glowing stars, but for Scarlett Reed, ever since her mother was torn out of her life like a page from a book, the days that followed blinked out of existence. Instead of comforting nights filled with home-cooked pies and joyous dancing, she spends them restrained in her comforter, submerged in darkness, her eyes swollen from the endless stream of tears.

Until she is shipped to Seabrook Island, a secluded beachside town she has no interest in making her home and thrust into the whirlpool of Tyler Evans - the boy fate knew she needed.

For a single summer, filled with stolen glances in the sea and captured breaths sprawled out on the sand, Scarlett and Tyler gravitate towards each other. For the first time since her world fell apart, she had found a home in someone other than her mother. But she didn't consider that her home could have secrets of his own locked behind closed doors, ones that she'd pry open in the shadows. Ones that would permanently expose the mold growing beneath the wallpaper.

While her scars were slowly healing, his were burrowing deeper. When their delicate scars are revealed, will they come together to heal, or will the shrapnel tear them apart?

"You shouldn't need to drink to try and drown your feelings Kayla. I've watched the people around me do this all my life and it doesn't fix anything." "I know it won't fix anything, but for right now it helps me forget" "You can't keep running away or hiding. In the end it all catches up." "You sound like you've been through this before." "I guess you could say that." "You want me to open up to you, but are you ever going to open up to me? I want to get to know you Tyler, but you are so closed off. You know why I got knocked over by that wave? Because I was watching you, I was watching your face and seeing how free you felt riding that wave. It's the only time I've ever seen you let go. You know that someone hurt me, but I think you have been hurt too. When you're ready to talk, I'll be waiting. Maybe we can help each other." "Maybe I'm not worth getting to know" he replied. "And maybe I'm not worth you trying to save me either. Or maybe I am" With that I got up and left him to think about what I said. I put my cards on the table, now it was up to him to make the next move. ******** A year ago, Kayla had it all, doting parents and a relationship with her older brother that others envied. By the end of junior year that changed, she's left broken after a series of events in her life, but she is determined to hide her pain from her friends and enjoy the summer. That is until she meets Tyler, who can see right through the hurt. He has his own secrets though and isn't ready to let anyone in. Together they will either fall apart or fall together.

Is it in the hugs from a parent? In the laughter shared with a best friend? Or is it the words that slip from the lips of the boy you want to love you back? I don't know, maybe it's a combination of all three, or maybe just maybe - it's in the eyes of the person staring back at you through the mirror. The person whom you need to love, in order love another. For me staring into the mirror only brings pain, regret, and shame. What I've done, the one thing I thought would give me love, brought nothing but shame. This person staring back at me...I don't know who she is, I don't know who I am anymore. Love.
