Echo, possibly the only sane member left of the Lucifugous Freak Family, and Tucker, curious novelist with an interest in talking to the dead, harbour unspoken feelings. And when Hunter's moon approaches, Echo's struggle to keep his family's secret becomes more impossible than he could even imagine. With a brother shrouded in alienated mystery and two twin cousins that couldn't be more different, Echo's family causes a rift between the two that Tucker could never have predicted...

His eyelid twitches. "You are..." The eyes travel up and down my figure. No guy has ever eyed me like that since my transition. It's all-consuming, intriguing, sizing me up. I bet he can see my soul through my flesh. "Tucker."

"Have you come here to die?" The voice was a bare whisper against the enveloping dark. It sounded stark and cold, with nothing in offer linked to safety. Yet, it brought me comfort of great proportions. ♛ ♛ ♛ In the dark wintry recesses of Baneberry Lane where the sun seems to set earlier than the rest, troubled passion blankets the streets. Known as the Valley of The Shadow of Death by the commoners for the dangerous folk it harbors. There's a house at the corner of the street underneath the pavement where a lone mollyboy stays with his dying mother with no inclination to trouble, save the knife he carries for protection. Brinley knows people look at him when he walks the districts. He sees the disgust in their eyes, he understands. The same dysphoria follows him everytime he looks at his body. Being born a girl, with a girls body and a girls voice took nothing from him knowing he was a boy. So he carries on, deepening his voice and binding his chest. Hoping one day, the misgendered notions would drop and people see him. Finn was born into wealth. Yet, the one thing he wants is the one thing he can never have. It's the secret he keeps against his family. Being attracted to the same sex is seen as a passing moment or a hankering in one's life. Finn knows that sex in his world is never followed by anything as absurd as love. So he carries on, still he craves and late at night, his desires take over him and he imagines what his life would feel like if he dropped all the pretenses. They could only shatter each other's worlds. ♚ ♚ ♚ Note: This is a short story set before the timeline of "Arsenic." Growing up in chaos isn't simple for all. Not many could cope. They would struggle and kick, but ultimately drown. However, for Dakota, that was his normality. Torturing. Maiming. Killing. That was his life, the life of a hunter. The Arizona line was elusive, written fame in the lore of hunters, and infamy for their prey. They were the best. No one could ever compare to their skills, their abilities, their ruthlessness. But Dakota was something else. His siblings might have learnt to enjoy the hunt, well most of them anyway, but Dakota didn't. There was always something missing for him, something he was waiting on. Silent and everlasting hope. A promise had been made to him, the day his twin brother was stolen, taken by the enemy, plucked right from the very home the Arizonas had grown up in. A promise of something better, something that he might actually want in his life. Now, almost sixteen years later, something was coming. A change was begging to be found. Maybe it would be for the best. Maybe Dakota would finally find that certain something that had been missing his whole life, something to fill the dark and fractured abyss that ached and wailed within. But nothing was ever that simple. Because, of course, the promise that had been made to Dakota would never be anything plausible for him, anything tangible to have and to hold. He had been promised a new life, by the greatest enemy of them all. It wouldn't be easy. Not with his family still clinging to his heels, the teachings of blood and violence burnt into his mind. No, leaving them behind wouldn't ever be easy. Then again, staying with them would only bring his inevitable death. Why not take the chance to die happy? After all, out of the ashes, a phoenix will rise...

It was a battle long fought. No one was winning, but no one was willing to stand back either. We were being hunted, hunted because we cried. Or smiled. Or laughed. Hunted because we couldn't hide everything that so desperately wanted to get out. Our emotions. They called us Voids. They wanted us dead. They wanted the world to be a blank canvas of cold stares and quiet voices. And Echo was the main target. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Everyone saw me as a mistake. At least other Void's chose to hide. I had no option. Because eventually, there are to many tears and the damn breaks. Eventually, the weight of the world crushes me and I cry. And I can't hold back.
