Phillip Crane's life is turned upside down when his older brother George dies, and then his father not so long after that.
As he goes through his brother George's possessions he comes across letters from one Marina Thompson and soon finds out that George had a secret relationship with her. While this does not seem so shocking the revelation that Marina is pregnant by his deceased brother shakes Phillip's world to its foundations.
He decides to do the right thing; out of duty, out of decorum so that the young woman is spared disgrace and marries her. They live like two strangers together, both going their separate ways, ignoring each other until somewhere something starts to change for Phillip.
A struggle between mind and heart ensues and the realisation that as much as he would like it, Marina would never love him... or would she?
