It's for everyone. Both those that have already tried recovery and those who are still fighting. I'm here to support. All of you, all of us. Because we all matter. I'm not a professional. Not a psychologist, psychiatrist. Just an ed survivor, writing from lived experience. Skip if you find these triggering - I completely understand. I believe that we all deserve support, and much better than the world that portrays serious diseases as "success stories" or "becoming healthier, prettier." We can do better. In short, this is a series about eating disorders and everything related to them: relapses, beginnings, the process, healing, society's influence, and recovery. I write about things that affect me as a person who has, and still is struggling with this little trap in her mind that says to give up. And that's why I'm creating this. We need something else besides the constant skinny obsession, don't we? Even if you decide not to read any of the chapters - I get it. If you don't agree with my point of view that I share in this project, that's alright. I'm not trying to convince anyone to my mind. I'm trying to let people with invisible, underrated struggles be heard, seen. And you're valid. You're enough. There're more of us. We are no longer silent. We're here for ourselves - that's already a big step toward healing. I'm not going to tell you that recovery is the same for everyone. I'm not going to tell you that people won't comment on your appearance. I'm not going to tell you that you'll always love yourself after recovery. But I am going to, at least try, to convince you that being alive is worth more than looking a certain way. You think feeling your bones is hot? You know what's more? BEING ALIVE. Healing is a process. And it's hard. But as long as you are alive, you always have a chance. I'm not one of the perfectly recovered ones. I see this trap. I've lived in it. I still do. But I'm not afraid of speaking about it - until someone finally hears me.
Sound of a Broken Drum
Syd is living on the edge of his broken psyche when he comes across the person he had been waiting his entire life to meet. As things flourish, the rude awakening of the edict "nothing gold can stay" changes the tune of Syd's life as he finds out a truth that is completely devastating. And in the world of mental illness, this is a particularly harsh reality where Syd has to make a difficult decision on what he has to give up in his life. But even a broken drum has to keep beating. The entire story has been published from Chapter 1 to the Epilogue. It is broken into three parts, each quite distinct from the others as Syd's life is altered dramatically. This thing is a labor of love. After completing the story, I realized how much it meant to me personally. I learned things about myself I did not know until I wrote it. I feel as if from writing "Sound of a Broken Drum", my life has changed. In the way I perceive it and in the way I perceive the world around me. This story is not for everyone. There are a lot of people I know who would never want to read something like this. It's not for the apathetic, the privileged, the ones who coast and indulge in the bullshit. I know a lot of people like that. Maybe I wrote it as a means to get away from them. There are certainly people I feel who would read something like this. The mentally-pained, the loners, introverts, the lonely, those who struggle through the everyday things many people take for granted. Those who know too much. And feel too much. I know what that is like. And I know this is why I wrote it. Because we can share each other's experiences through words, no one has to ever feel like they are alone, regardless of how distant the world is. And regardless of how much trash and clutter from society there is in the way of your field of vision, always know there are those few you will find who will make the struggle well-worth it. Bright lights, the beat of the music beneath my feet. Distant chatter, quite whispers. The feeling of joy, loss, heartbreak, and loneliness surround me. Buried in a crowd, drowning under the gazes of people who look through you. I am but of glass, a mirror if you will, willing to be seen through, but not seen. Screaming in a room full of people when no one can hear you, let alone see you. Hidden breaths, rising, falling. Isn't that funny, falling? Laughing would be easier than standing here in the crowded place, filled with people, faces, judging every moment the other makes. I could tell you the peace I get standing alone in a room filled with people who only see you as a mirror for who they don't want to be. I could cry tears of blood, and non would ever so much bat an eye in my direction, but I love it. The feeling of being unseen as to appose being seen for the matieral object I once was. Silent, unmoving, unwilling. I am but an idea, glass, shatterable, broken beyond compare. But strong, resistance flows through me. Willing me to be the best I can be, but can I? Who says I make sense, who says I am even me, am I? That's a question I spent years wondering. Who would I be without these scars that tether my skin, marking each even, like a calender. To mend the feelings people have isn't a easy thing, but to break is easy, always easy. How easy it is to forget, to run. I can feel the ground beneath my feet, feel the soil in-between the crooks of my toes, I could describe to you the smell of the rain. Pinpoint the center of the earth, but as I stand here, again amongst the crowd of people stand in this room. I am lost again, an idea, but for what purpose? If I could run, navigate my way through this crowd, I would seek refuge somewhere dark and cold, where I could take off this cloak and be one with who I am, or want to be.
