As the oldest child of the family, Alithea is forced into a marriage with a knight. Having been raised up as the disappointment of the family, she can't imagine disappointing yet another person, let along her husband-to-be.

As fate would have it, her knight is called away the morning after their wedding, to fulfill his duties to the crown in restoring peace to the land against the mad King of the North. It will be five years before her husband, now a well-respected knight known for his historic heroics on the battlefield, returns to collect his bride.

Despite the five years, Alithea still finds herself unprepared for the worst yet to come. How can she possibly fulfill her duties when she fears to disappoint? What will he do once he comes to understand she's just as a disappointment and useless as her family claims her to be?
