Despite the two years since her realisation, Maisie still hadn't come out to her parents yet, and statements like these made it seem like she would disappoint them by coming out. So she kept quiet about it, didn't talk about romance, even when Claire tried to give her the talk.

... but sometimes it weighed her down, made her wish she could be open with them. It made her go into these phases that lasted for days, where she felt lethargic. She didn't want to get up, eat, or do anything at all. All she wanted to do during those phases was sleep. Sleep until her troubles were gone.
