Kai once had a little sister, though he had a rough childhood, they were determined to train themselves to become ninja. The 2 watch from above as the other ninja team fights the Overlord, Nya sacrifices herself and goes missing, the following week Kai gets invited to a tournament far from Ninjago City where he meets another ninja team who is also in search for a lost friend of theirs, when the ninjas tried to befriend Kai suspicions were made.

He tried to find where Nya was adopted at but there was no luck and soon after that the orphanage kick kai out as they didn't want to deal with him. He was force to live off the streets for years but when he came across a kid that remind Kai of the hardship of living on the streets, he just had to take him in as his own brother.
