A machine was meant to perform its assigned task as efficiently as possible, just as humanity was intended to run on a singular course, unencumbered by excess baggage of ideology, blind faith, irrational prejudice, or emotional need.
Each being was designed to be a self-contained unit, with nothing-nothing at all-to rely on outside itself. Androids were designed to serve, no will of their own to consider, devoid of the weaknesses that afflict the flesh.
All of which served to make them the supreme example of the mechanical ideal: perfect, uncomplaining slaves.
