Tanjiro is a demon slayer with a special blade, if he cuts a demons head obviously it dies but if he killed a bad guy like rapist or kidnapper or something like that it takes the soul into the sword. 
    
    He also uses Sun and Moon Breathing, Nezuko is adopted by Giyuu since he never met Tanjiro as Tanjiro left at a very young age after being taken away from his family, he knew about their deaths though and Nezuko disappeared.
