[This is after episode 9 and El never went with the Byers to California. They had already 'defeated 'Vecna. Max was never blind but she did break her bones, so she's in the hospital. There are no cracks in Hawkins as you see in episode 9 with 'snow'.]

. Johnathon is in summer vacation before college and he is trying to figure out to either go with Nancy or Argyle.
Will has gone to California and is returning to Hawkins to see all of his friends. Including El, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Max, Erica. While, Joyce is still on her "Business Trip" with Murray.
When Will steps a foot in Hawkins, He feels something passing the "Welcome to Hawkins!" It is not a good feeling.
