10 000 people had logged into the VRMMORPG known as Sword Art Online, and none of them logged out. They were all trapped inside by the game's creator: Akihiko Kayaba, and were forced to complete the game and all 100 Floors of Aincrad, or die trying.

During the duration of the incident before it ended, it was discovered that many players had turned to murdering their fellow players, forming guilds and parties that hunted down innocent people...for survival, for resources...or simply because they could.
