His fire was a bluff of life in the withering carcass of his company. Walton stood staring at the sands around him. The dunes rose and fell with the hypnotic rhythm of ocean waves, gusts of wind scattering the nighttime sand through the air like a silver whip. Above him the sky opened in a vast display of constellations he had forgotten the names of, each star pulsing a small but vibrant light. He had led them out here. Three hundred men wrapped in crimson robes with a sword and spear in each hand. There had been complaints of bandits in the Middling Pass; robbing, killing, raping. The Legion had been sent to quell the bandits, Walton had been placed in charge. He had ordered a group of twenty to enter the Middling Pass at nightfall.

Cloud struggled to open his eyes. His head was spinning rapidly and his stomach lurched with nausea. In this condition he was assured he would not be getting to his feet anytime soon. He did his best to collect himself without moving too much. His left shoulder pad was digging into his neck but he didn't feel up to shifting just yet. His eyes opened to reveal a landscape of broken concrete that revealed it's rebar skeleton. Dust swirled in small eddies creating a haze in the air. The horizon line was red and Cloud realized he couldn't see a single green thing. Everything looked dead in colors of black, gray, or brown. Cloud managed to push himself up to a kneeling position; his left shoulder protesting the movement with pain. He shifted his weight to his right arm and looked around again. Closer examination showed him that he must be on the remains of a highway. His gaze moved slowly around trying to see someone else but he was the only person here. He wondered how long he had been out. "Tifa?" he said. He waited only a moment for a response. When he didn't get one he pushed himself to his feet. There was a jagged and broken edge of highway in front of him. He stepped forward holding his left arm with his right. "Tifa!?" he called again louder. Below him all he could see was a debris field of broken concrete. Rebar twisted up like metal spikes at the bottom of a pit trap. Cloud gritted his teeth and raised both his arms to cup his mouth. "TIFA!!" he yelled praying for a response.

And she definitely didn't expect to wake up in the world of Fourth Wing-the book that once kept her going through the darkest nights. But this isn't a dream. It's not fiction. And survival here demands more than knowledge of what's "supposed" to happen. Now living under the name Liora Emberveil, she tells herself this is a second chance. A chance to become someone stronger. Better. Someone worth something. She throws herself into the role of a fictional heroine; confident, brave, untouchable. But no matter how fast she runs, she can't outrun herself. Because the truth is: Lila didn't come here healed. She came here broken. She's anxious, self-destructive, and still carrying the weight of a life she didn't want to live. And the more she tries to control the story, the more it spirals. Every decision rewrites the future she thought she knew. Every connection threatens the mask she's carefully built. And when she catches the attention of Xaden Riorson-a man who sees too much-her carefully drawn lines begin to blur. If you're not who you were, and you're not who you pretend to be... then who are you? βοΈŽβ˜…If you enjoy this story on Wattpad but want options, it's also available on AO3! Every year, swaths of 20-year-olds descend upon a college campus. Unfortunately, this college specializes in war, in consideration of the one raging at its borders. Outposts and enemies line the eastern mountains, guarded by many from the army, but most notably, the Dragon Riders. (Y/N)'s future was determined long before she was born. As far as she was concerned, none of that destiny included Basgiath; not after she watched her grandfather descend into mad ramblings from his battles after bonding a dragon, then fell to the whims of a power-hungry Colonel who would do anything to hurt her. The quadrant destroyed the good and empowered the bad, and she wanted nothing to do with it, no matter what her name spelled. Xaden Riorson's future was clear, no Basgiath or dragons in sight. That was, until he was 16, when his father's apostasy-turned-secession fell apart; his home was burned; and his father went missing, only to be reported by someone he thought was an ally, then murdered. Unfortunately for both of them, Basgiath wouldn't let them off so easily. Xaden had a two year head start and became a Wingleader, ready-and willing-to sacrifice anything to fulfill his goals. Some may call them selfish and many call him ruthless, but he's no stranger to prescribed titles. (Y/N) stood before the bridge, but she had no intention of making it across. Her ruined future and unstable life would be given to a cause much more worthy than the torture of Basgiath: her mother, her father, and her patron: Zihnal, the God of Chaos. *SHE/HER* [Book 1 of 2]
