Will Byers has Thixophobia due to the traumatic experience of being stuck within the "upside down". He refused therapy to avoid feeling abnormal, which resulted to him losing a couple of his friends, including his best friend Mike Wheeler.
Mike Wheeler left the group along with El following close behind. He couldn't handle the trauma and the increased bullying as well as everyone else and chose to leave.
Read what happens when Mike turns to Will for math improvement and in return Will rekindles a friendship he thought was dead, and a potential relationship he thought was practically paradoxical.
