The year is 1940 , the place , a village in India called Adityanarayanpur .
Duke, 17, the eldest son of a wealthy landlord and Piku , 15 , the zamindar's Pa's son , are childhood bestfriends .They realize that they are in love . Piku , younger and poorer , rejects Duke's confessions even though they share a fiery first kiss . Not for long , though . His attraction to Duke is overwhelming and they start a secret relationship that would continue for years as they go through med school together . Duke feels suffocated in their secrecy and comes out to his father when he's forced to go through an arranged marriage . A manumental clash ensues , violence erupts and separates the lovers .
