Phoenix Porter is a woman living in a shabby chic apartment, on the north-side of Chicago. At the moment she’s just trying to make ends meet. In the mornings she steps over her diploma, a heap of old coffee cups and a stack of unopened student loan bills on her way to the bathroom. She dresses hurriedly as the sun begins to rise and narrowly avoids slipping on old vomit on her dash across the parking lot to her car. She is the kind of woman who thinks too much and far too hard. She sports a furrowed brow that makes her look like she’s constantly searching her mind for something she’s misplaced.

When first we find her, she is utterly alone except for the shadows, which stalk the path up ahead, mumbling softly to themselves. Barefooted, in a kind of park, she searches for foot prints. She is hunting her Memory. It’s so cold here, in the space inside her mind, that her breath dangles participles on the breeze. She describes the experience of trying hard not to feel, because all she did was catch the whisper of it's scent in the wind, and now she can’t seem to stop crying. Suddenly feeling hunted herself, she holds her breath, and runs until she loses the sound of it's heartbeat. She doesn't stop until she’s numb, coming to rest beneath the only tree that isn't flowering in the park.

At the rise of her story her greatest secret… is that she doesn't know herself at all."Reasons for Being" is a record of her journey inward.
