His fingertips slip in Eddie's blood, still wet and warm but cooling rapidly, tracing dark red lines to the place where his jaw and neck meet. His fingers throb.

...Wait.

Steve frowns. He lifts his fingers, and the throbbing stops.

Slowly, delicately, he lays them against Eddie's throat, and the thrumming starts again. It's thready, barely there, but Steve can feel it all the same. "Oh, fuck," he says, and presses down a little harder.

It's a heartbeat.
