Loretta Bly was one outrageous women.   She was a journalist, inventor, charity worker, and all around a great human being. When Loretta lands a job as a writer for The New York Journal, she is required to feign insanity to investigate reports of brutality and neglect at the Men and Women's Lunatic Institution on Blackwell Island. 

Not knowing how long she will be attending the institution, she must keep up the act of an insane woman. Loretta knows that if anyone in the institution finds out about her plan, her life would be in shambles and she would be stuck, living the life as a mentally insane women for the rest of her life.
